One Year in Dallas + Life Update

I cannot believe it has been a little over a year since I moved halfway across the country and started calling Dallas home! Time has flown by and I’d like to take a moment and reflect on some of the things from the past year, share some pics and an exciting update!

Why am I in Dallas anyway?

Quick backstory for those of you that don’t know: in March of 2018 I moved from South Carolina to Dallas, Texas for an internship with Dillard’s department store. I had to have an internship to complete my degree in fashion merchandising from the University of South Carolina. I met recruiters for Dillard’s at the NRF Student Big Show in New York City in January of 2018. After a few phone interviews my parents and I packed up my car and drove the 15 hours to the lone star state.

Living in Dallas

I had an amazing way to start my transition to a new place. I was fortunate enough to have a friend from Dallas who’s parents agreed to take me in until I could get settled. They were instrumental in my first 6 (!!) months of being here and made it so much easier to get acclimated. I truly can not thank them enough.

After a few months of working and getting to know the area, I finally started making some friends. Some were the girls I worked with and others were girls I was blessed to meet through Dani Austin’s Sassy Club. We planned meet ups and I visited all kinds of new places and had lots of yummy food.

Moving into a Place of my Own

My first friend here was my fellow Dillard’s intern, Helena. Not knowing each other but also not knowing anyone else really brought us together. So well in fact, that in September we moved in together in an apartment in the Plano area. Our apartment is perfect for us and it was so much fun touring and narrowing down where I was going to live. (Pst… Here you can see some of my adventure and advice on apartment hunting)

Long Distance and Closing the Gap

Some of you may already know this, but I have been dating my boyfriend, Bailey, for nearly 5 years now. If you’ve been here before you may remember him from my “Day-Date in Dallas” post. After moving to Texas, he was able to visit me a couple times before closing the distance and moving out here in October! It has been so special having him live 15 minutes away instead of 15 hours!

Other Fun Events

Dallas is a huge change of pace for me. My hometown back in South Carolina has a population of about 1,000 people. My graduating class was 14 people in high school. T-I-N-Y. And while there are somethings I miss – not dealing with traffic is pretty high on the list – coming to a metropolitan area has enabled me to do some really fun things I couldn’t at home. Namely, concerts. I was lucky at how timing synced up with my move and some of my favorite artists touring. Even my very first week here I bought a ticket to see Lorde. I found a ticket an hour before the show started and drove myself to the American Airlines center lol. Since living here I have been able to see Lorde, Drake and Migos, Taylor Swift, and Ed Sheeran. I’ve also gotten to hear some amazing up and coming country artists at smaller venues!

Blogging Girl Bosses

A blogging community is something else that wasn’t as prevalent in SC. Moving here (especially after joining the Sassy Club) had me excited at the possibility of meeting some of these women that I have looked up to on social media for some time. They were all incredibly kind and a joy to meet.

Dani Austin, Brooke Kenney, Kate Pagditt

Working Woman

I mentioned earlier that the whole reason I moved to Texas was for an internship with Dillard’s. After completing the internship portion, they brought me on full time to be the women’s contemporary manager. After 9 months with Dillard’s I decided it wasn’t the best fit for me and had an opportunity to further my experience with Loft. Loft has always had an aesthetic that I enjoyed so it was a great fit. I got there just in time for the Christmas crazies but had so much fun working with this amazing group of ladies that are killing it in this, at times difficult, retail field. I have enjoyed my time at both of these retailers and have lots of wardrobe pieces to show for it! This however brings me to my exciting announcement.

What am I Doing Next?

I am ecstatic to (finally) announce here that in just a couple of weeks I will begin training to become an American Airlines flight attendant!! I am thrilled for this new adventure and can’t wait to share the journey with all of you!

Whew! That was a lot to take in. I tried to keep it short and sweet. If you’ve made it this far thank you so much for reading and hop on over to my instagram and leave a little ✈️ in the comments of the picture I announced this post on! Thank you so much for reading, and let me know if you would like to see more about my flight attendant journey!

Until next time, stay Fab friends Xoxo,

Emily
